Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a conflict for decades over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is the internationally recognized part of Azerbaijan occupied by Armenia after it launched a military campaign against Azerbaijan in 1991. By the time the ceasefire reached in 1994, Armenia forcibly occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, which includes the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The bloody war claimed the lives of 30,000 ethnic Azerbaijanis and expelled one million more from their homeland.

He also provided the Background information on the provocation of Armenia along the Armenia-Azerbaijan state from 12 to 14 July, 2020 and other documents to the media persons.

Background information on the provocation of Armenia along the Armenia-Azerbaijan state from 12 to 14 July, 2020.

On 12th of July 2020, Armenia once again, in a blatant violation of international law, attempted to change the line of contact at the state border with Azerbaijan.

Starting from afternoon of July 12, units of the armed forces of Armenia, grossly violated the ceasefire on the south-west direction of the Aghdam village of Tovuz district of the Armenia- Azerbaijan state border and tried to seize a battle position of the Azerbaijani Army with the use of artillery and mortars.

The intention of the hostile forces was to gain control of the territory that provides tactical superiority and keeps the surrounding Azerbaijani villages under the constant pressure.

The armed units of Azerbaijan took adequate measures to repel armed attack against the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and compelled the hostile forces to drive back. During the battles, the following four servicemen of the armed forces of Azerbaijan were killed, while several were wounded:

1st lieutenant Mahmudov Rashad Rashid

Sergeant Sadigov Vugar Latif

Senior soldier Mammadov Elshad Donmez

Soldier Dashdamirov Khayyam Mahammad

Armed forces of Armenia continued shelling of the positions of Azerbaijan in the Tovuz direction on the night of July 13. During the night battles, the units of the armed forces of Azerbaijan using artillery, mortars and tanks took counter-measures to neutralize hostile forces and gain control of the situation.

With precise targeting, the armed units of Azerbaijan were able to neutralize some Armenian fire and battle (stronghold) positions. One artillery piece, one military vehicle and several servicemen of armed forces of Armenia were neutralized.

The armed forces of Armenia also grossly violated the ceasefire in Nakhchivan direction. Using large-caliber weapons, the enemy subjected to fire the defensive positions of the armed units of Azerbaijan in the direction of Shahbuz and Julfa regions. The use of tracer and incendiary projectiles led to an arson of up to 5 hectares of territory of Azerbaijan.

On the night of July 13-14, armed forces of Armenia continued to subject the positions of the armed forces of Azerbaijan , as well as civilian residential areas in the Aghdam, Dongar Qushchu and Alibeyli villages of Tovuz district with heavy weaponry, including 0-30 howitzers (122 mm) and 120mm-caliber mortars. As a consequence, there were casualties among the civil ians and serious damage was inflicted upon the civilian infrastructure in the mentioned residential areas:

The armed units of Azerbaijan suffered the following losses:

Major-General Hashimov Polad lsrail

Colonel Mirzoyev llgar Anzor

Major Ahmadov Namig Hajan

Major Novruzov Anar Gulverdi

Warrant Officer Zeynalli llgar Ayaz

Warrant Officer Babayev Yashar Vasif

Non-commissioned officer, soldier Mustafazadeh Elchin Arif

Military and combat equipment for various purposes, command post, reserves in the depth of defense of Armenia were destroyed, as a result of response measures taken by the armed forces of Azerbaijan to repel the attack of Armenia.

Unlike the Armenian side, the armed forces of Azerbaijan acts solely within the limits of self-defense and do not fire at civilian population and civilian settlements.

Currently, the situation is still tense, armed forces of Azerbaijan takes necessary measures to control the situation.

This provocative act of Armenia should be seen as a continuation of the recent actions and statements of its leadership targeting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. Armenia deliberately resorted to this armed provocation along the international border with a view to introducing a new dimension to the unresolved Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict aiming at engaging the members of the political-military alliance, the CSTO, to which it is a member,

into the conflict. With this act of aggression, Armenian leadership also aims at diverting the attention of Armenian public opinion from evolving deep economic, financial and political crisis in the countryexacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This deliberate violation by Armenia of the ceasefire along with its other actions and

statements to increase tension on the ground demonstrates hypocrisy of this country's alleged adherence to the global ceasefire appeal by the UN Secretary-General.

The determination and courage of the armed forces of Azerbaijan in repelling latest
aggression of Armenia should serve as a proof that the Republic of Azerbaijan will not tolerate

Armenia's attacks against its sovereignty and territorial integrity nor will it reconcile with the
occupation of its internationally recognized territories.

The Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan expects the international community to condemn this irresponsible behavior of Armenia, and to persuade the leadership of this country to engage in good faith in negotiations with a view to finding a political settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through the implementation of the four UN Security Council
 resolutions (822 (1993), 853 (1993), 874 (1993) and 884 (1993)
